Spirit of Scotland
The first event of its kind to be held in Rome, Spirit of Scotland, organised by FG Events & Sport and Whisky Wine & Words, will provide a showcase for Scottish single malt whisky and for those products which are an expression of a country rich in history and tradition.
Everyone who visits the stylish 19th century orangery, the Aranciera, on the 10th and 11th of March, will have the opportunity of experiencing the very best that the Scotch whisky world has to offer. Producers, importers, distributors, independent bottlers, collectors, clubs, associations and Rome’s whisky enthusiasts will meet under one roof to compare notes, forge business links and taste, taste, taste!
Besides providing an innovative stage for exhibitors, Spirit of Scotland aims at fostering a greater awareness of the cultural and social aspects of single malt whisky drinking and at supporting a responsible approach to its consumption.
The two day event will feature an intense programme of ‘open’ and ‘professional’ whisky tastings. Visitors will be invited to taste a wide selection of the malts on display in ‘open’ tastings by purchasing a number of tokens, worth one euro each, which can be exchanged for a favourite or less familiar malt at any of the stands. The exhibitors will provide the background to the chosen dram and offer tasting tips and comments. Depending on the age and availability of a whisky, a single tasting will normally require 2, 3 or more tokens.
Professional tastings – Master classes
Hosted by experts from the whisky world, Master Classes are tutored tastings which provide a unique insight into Scotland’s famous spirit and give the better informed participant a chance to learn more. A Master Class might concentrate on hidden or ‘lost’ distilleries or on different expressions of a specific brand. For those visitors to whom whisky is an unknown territory there will be a special initiation class. Places on Master Classes are limited, have a separate cost and must be booked ahead of time. A class normally lasts for approximately one hour.
Exclusive Auction
Lovers of rare and valuable whiskies can’t afford to miss the ‘event within the event’ - a Saturday night auction when some very special collectors’ bottles will come under the hammer.
The Whisky Kitchen
Pairing food with wine is a given, and even the smallest restaurant has its wine list, but the concept of pairing food with whisky (or of providing a whisky list in a restaurant) is a relatively new and exciting one. At Spirit of Scotland finger foods of typical Scottish and Italian delicacies will be proposed as accompaniments to the native malts.
Chocolate
Thanks to the presence of a well known chocolate brand, chocolate lovers will have the opportunity of experiencing the heady aromas and flavours that result from that most natural of combinations – whisky and chocolate.
Beer
Scotland’s other famous tipple – beer – will not be forgotten at Spirit of Scotland. The Aranciera will host a real Scottish pub bar where visitors can enjoy a ‘pint’ or a bottle from Brasserie 4:20.
The City of Rome Pipe Band
Symbol of the spirit of a nation, the Scottish bagpipe, played by pipers from The City of Rome Pipe Band, will lend a fitting musical flavour to the event.
Food
Whisky’s leading role at Spirit of Scotland will be sustained by a ‘supporting cast’ of stands exhibiting typical Scottish products such as shortbread, salmon and jams.
